    Sculpture by Jacob Miley.

    In this beginner class, you will create a work of art with your hands – no prior experience needed! With step-by-step instruction from acclaimed Arkansas artist Michael Warrick, you will reference the human figure with a live in-class model to shape soft clay into a classical sculpture figure with hips, waist, chest, and shoulders.

  • Beginner | Nevelson-Inspired Sculpture Workshop

    Create a unique free-standing clay sculpture inspired by the work of Louise Nevelson and AMFA's Architects of Being exhibition. Students will visit the AMFA galleries to explore artworks, gathering ideas for incorporating shapes and form into a sculptural design.

    Using a special black clay for this project, ceramic artist India Childress will lead you through manipulating the clay with slabs to achieve an exciting and complete artwork. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to draw inspiration from a rich collection while learning about and developing your ceramic techniques.

    Pottery by Zach Wollert.

    Hand carve unique designs onto soft printmaking blocks to imprint onto clay slabs and create textured raised surfaces. Make simple slab-built cylinders and other forms with a low-fire red clay body.

    Finish your ceramic work with brushing an effective oxide wash to highlight the printed clay surface.

  • Intermediate | Glazing Workshop
    Pottery by Vijay Gondhalekar.

    Learn and review ceramic glazing techniques. Instruction will cover the practical aspects of glazing like dipping, brushing, and trailing high-fire studio glazes onto bisqueware. Use of wax resist will also be demonstrated.

    Participants can bring up to ten hand-sized wheel-thrown or handbuilt bisque-fired pieces to be glazed during this one-day workshop. Work will be fired in a high-fire gas kiln. Cone 10 clay is required.

    Open Studio is for students to practice and develop their skills independently in an energetic, community-based setting during most AMFA business hours. No instruction is provided.

    Bisque and glaze kilns will be loaded and fired throughout the session. Students will need to purchase clay through the AMFA Museum Store. Some classes are scheduled during this time, so registered students will be emailed a calendar/schedule that shows when the studios are closed.
