Winter Youth Classes
AMFA offers children a variety of playful educational experiences exploring the visual and performing arts.
Please review our guidelines and policies before selecting an offering and beginning the registration process. Classes start the week of January 13, 2025, and registration closes the day before the offering begins.
Classes
Four-week and eight-week classes are available for students in Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. All supplies are included.

Multi-week classes are marked down by an average of 17% thanks to the Reduced Tuition Program!
Windgate Art School’s Reduced Tuition Program is supported by Michael Laughter. Reduced tuition is automatically applied to all classes through 2025.

Mini Masters: Painting | Grades K-2
Discover the joy of art in this engaging class! Children will explore the AMFA Galleries, learning how to view and appreciate paintings in new ways. Afterward, they will head to the studio to unleash their creativity, experimenting with artist brushes and a vibrant palette of colors.
Through hands-on activities, they will develop an appreciation for art, express themselves, and experience the magic of bringing their ideas to life through visual storytelling.

Draw, Paint, and Explore | Grades K-5
Your child will embark on a creative journey filled with drawing and painting. They will build skills using pencils, charcoal, watercolor, acrylics, and tempera while creating works from observation in the AMFA Galleries and from their imagination. During the class, they will receive step-by-step instruction on how to draw, mix colors, and apply brushstrokes to create their masterpiece.

Art Adventure: Sculpture | Grades K-5
Children will explore the world of sculpture while being inspired by the AMFA Foundation Collection. They will visit the galleries, create sculptures out of wood, paper, and cardboard, and try some non-traditional art-making materials like spray foam and found objects. Students will gain problem-solving skills, build confidence, and inspire their imaginations.

Seussical Clay Creations | Grades K-5
Children will get excited for AMFA's upcoming theatre production of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat and the Hat and be inspired by the wonderful worlds created by Dr. Seuss. They will experiment with the fundamentals of handbuilding – pinching, coiling, and slabs – to create original works of art out of clay while making new friends, building fine motor skills, and sparking their creativity.

Students will find inspiration in the unique concept jewelry in the AMFA's Studio Time + Studio Practice exhibition to create their own wearable art out of metal.

Middle & High School Clay Intensive | Grades 6-12
New and advanced pottery students will explore handbuilding, wheel throwing, and creating sculptures in this diverse clay course.
They will learn how to design surfaces through texture, decoration styles, and glazing techniques while building critical thinking skills, opening new avenues to the creative process, and making new friends with similar interests.

Middle & High School Digital Drawing | Grades 6-12
Students will learn to take their digital art to the next level in this course. They will gain an understanding of the digital brushes, layering tools, and brushes used when creating on a screen. Students will visit the AMFA Galleries and create digital paintings and drawings from inspiring artworks.
An iPad with Procreate and an Apple pencil will be provided to students to use during scheduled class times. Students are welcome to bring their own tablet with Procreate installed.

Portfolio Building | Grades 9-12
Build a stronger and more diverse portfolio for college review. Instructors and professionals from local Windgate art programs will cover requirements for portfolio submissions, types of art programs available, and career choices.
Use drawing, painting, and design to create or strengthen a portfolio while clarifying your voice and ideas. The interests and needs of each student will determine assignments and class critiques.

Life Drawing | Grades 9-12
Students will build a stronger portfolio while drawing from a live, draped model. They will explore different sight measuring methods, build knowledge of human anatomy, and develop stronger life drawing skills.
Classroom sessions will include both a clothed model and a skeleton, using graphite, charcoal, and pastel.

"An Unlikely Hero" Studio Experience and Play | Grades 4-8
Students will attend a matinee performance of An Unlikely Hero in AMFA's Performing Arts Theater followed by an art-making experience in the Windgate Art School where they will explore their own superpowers to create a superhero self-portrait.

"An Unlikely Hero" Superhero Storytelling | Grades 4-8
Students will flex their storytelling and drawing muscles together while creating an adventure through pictures and actions. Students will design the characters, develop the story, and draw their characters to convey the story.
Each student will walk away with their own unique short comic. This day-long experience will help build communication skills and confidence and boost new creative outlets.

Faces of "Rivera's Paris" Portrait Drawing Workshop | Grades 9-12
Students will visit the Rivera’s Paris exhibition and study the portraits of artists by artists. They will return to the studio and learn to draw portraits working from a live model while exploring the areas of facial anatomy, model positioning, lighting, and expression. The instructor will lead students through lessons and critiques that will help the students build on existing skills.

Portrait of an Artist | Ages 8+
Visit the Rivera’s Paris exhibition and see all the amazing portraits of artists created in many different styles. Return to the studio to work together on creating stunning portraits of each other.
Participants will be led through fun drawing exercises to learn the secrets of drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth before making a final work in watercolor.
