Facilities Associate
The Facilities Associate is responsible for safeguarding the museum building and property by supporting AMFA’s day-to-day operations.
In 2023, the Museum reopened following a four-year renovation that expanded the building and grounds. Designed by the renowned architecture firm Studio Gang, the facility includes landscaped grounds by the firm SCAPE and secures AMFA’s position as one of the top cultural institutions in the region. The building includes state-of-the-art galleries, an art school, restaurant, store, theater, lecture hall, and other programming and event spaces. AMFA is an active partner in the educational, economic, and cultural life of a diverse community, inviting discovery, creativity and learning through engagement with the visual and performing arts.
The Facilities Associate is responsible for safeguarding the museum building and property by supporting AMFA’s day-to-day operations. Additionally, they help ensure the smooth execution of special events and programs and maintain spaces in pristine condition. This role includes a blend of facilities upkeep, event setup and breakdown, as well as providing basic AV support during events.
The Associate will work closely with various museum departments to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, and event participants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of museum events, including arranging tables, chairs, and other equipment as specified by event plans.
- Coordinate with event planners and facilities team to ensure that event spaces are prepared and restored to their original condition post-event.
- Handle the setup and operation of audio-visual (AV) equipment such as projectors, microphones, and speakers for events and presentations.
- Provide on-site support during events to troubleshoot and manage AV needs or logistical challenges.
- Perform routine janitorial tasks, including cleaning public and staff areas, maintaining restrooms, and ensuring supplies are stocked, coordinating with contract janitorial services to keep spaces in pristine condition.
- Assist in maintaining and repairing the building’s physical structures including, but not limited to, vacuuming, mopping, spot cleaning windows, and other general cleaning duties.
- Assist in light maintenance tasks such as minor repairs, replacing light bulbs, touch up painting, etc. .
- Assist in monitoring and maintaining all roof drains, which may also include removal of debris.
- Support the Director of Facilities in identifying and resolving building maintenance issues.
- Proactively support Museum programs by ensuring necessary equipment, seating, and technology is in place.
- Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of common and storage areas and facilities.
- Assist with grounds upkeep and maintenance including trash pick-up, etc.
- Serve as facilities point of contact with vendors, as needed.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent; one year or more related experience or a combination of both education and experience.
- Previous experience in facilities maintenance, event setup, or related roles, preferably in a museum, gallery, or cultural institution is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of audio-visual equipment setup and troubleshooting; must be willing to receive training on AMFA equipment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required for events.
- Ability to understand and follow standard operating procedures.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished orally or in written, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to exercise good judgment to handle conflict and resolve issues with tact and diplomacy, remaining calm and collected.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Physical Demands
- Regularly stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time (up to 5 hours at a time)
- Regularly required to climb stairs.
- Regularly required to climb ladders, operate lifts, and work at heights.
- Regularly bend, lean, push, pull, stoop, and crawl.
- Regularly lift up to 50 lbs. alone.
Communication Demands
- Regularly required to use speech to interact with team and the public.
Vision Demands
- Regular use of visual acuity to review written materials and perform detailed maintenance functions.
Work Environment/Exposure
- Work is performed both inside and outside Museum grounds.
- Regularly, but temporarily, exposed to outside weather conditions; occasionally includes rain, snow, ice, sleet, and extreme hot or cold temperatures.
- Occasionally exposed to noise levels up to eighty-five decibels.
