AMFA offers a diverse selection of art classes for adults that provide an opportunity to be inspired and get creative at any age or ability level. Classes meet once a week for three, five, or ten-week sessions, with offerings ranging from beginner courses to advanced, open-studio options.

  • Gestural Figure Sculpture

    In this three-week class, you will work from a live model to create quick 15-minute gestural figure sculptures. Learn basic handbuilding and cold finishing techniques, and participate in a group critique.

  • Ceramics Open Studio

    Open studio sessions are available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sundays this spring, allowing intermediate and advanced students to develop their practice in an energetic community-based setting.

    No instruction will be provided for these sessions: a studio monitor will be on hand for purchasing clay and supplies.

  • Repetition Throwing

    This three-week class is designed for intermediate students who want to advance their throwing skills by repeating a form until it becomes muscle memory.

    Using a potter’s wheel, you will be challenged to repeat the same form for the entirety of the class — with a goal of 50 pots. Be amazed at the improvement from the first class to the last, then choose the five best pots to glaze and fire.

  • Shibori Scarf Dying

    In this three-week class, create exciting geometric patterns on cloth through resist-dying with clamped wooden blocks, in the Japanese tradition of Itajime Shibori. Use the miter saw, bandsaw, and sanders to make matching sets of wood shapes. After finishing shapes, clamp them onto folded fabric scarves and dye them in an indigo vat.

    Reference books with traditional Itajime patterns and instructions will be in the studio.

  • Introduction to Intaglio Printmaking

    Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method that involves scratching an image into a plate with a pointed tool. Intaglio printmaking is the opposite of relief printmaking as it is the sunken areas of the plate that print rather than the raised areas.

    In this three-week class, learn how to etch a metal plate, ink it, and pull a print using the printing press.

    In this three-week class, build a small Shaker style side table out of hardwood and learn how to use all the major equipment in the shop. Mill lumber to size using the jointer, planer, and table saw.

    Taper legs, cut joinery with a domino joiner, and sand each part before gluing and finishing the table. Work from a standard design with minor size and proportion adjustments possible.
