SUMMARY:Concert Series: Rio Meets New Orleans
DESCRIPTION:Brazilian jazz guitarist Romero Lubambo\, along with acclaimed clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen and renowned jazz pianist and composer Peter Martin\, unite for a captivating show titled Rio Meets New Orleans. \n\n\nAbout Romero Lubambo\nIn 1985\, Romero Lubambo came to the United States and brought with him a new sound in Brazilian jazz guitar. \n\n\n\nRomero’s guitar playing unites the styles and rhythms of his native Brazilian musical heritage with his fluency in the American jazz tradition to form a distinctive new sound. \n\n\n\nFrom the cool\, sophisticated rhythms of his native Brazil to hard bop\, Romero is a guitarist who’s comfortable in any musical setting. He is an uncommonly gifted soloist and musical improviser with a steady stream of unpredictably creative musical thoughts and the virtuosity to deliver them. \n\n\n\nAfter arriving in New York City\, Romero quickly established himself as a “first call” session and touring guitarist who was in demand not only for his authentic Brazilian sound\, but also for his command of a variety of styles. \n\n\n\nLubambo has performed and recorded with many outstanding artists\, including Dianne Reeves\, Billie Eilish\, Angelique Kidjo\, Michael Brecker\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Kathleen Battle\, Diana Krall\, Herbie Mann\, Wynton Marsalis\, Gal Costa\, Kurt Elling\, Kenny Barron\, Luciana Souza\, Cyro Baptista\, Sergio and Odair Assad\, Ivan Lins\, Grover Washington Jr.\, Vernon Reid\, Flora Purim and Airto\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Harry Belafonte\, Larry Coryell\, Gato Barbieri\, Leny Andrade\, James Carter\, Paula Robison\, Dave Weckl\, Jason Miles\, and Cesar Camargo Mariano… among many others. He has also established himself as a composer and performer on his own critically acclaimed recording projects as well as on those of Trio Da Paz\, a Grammy®-nominated Brazilian jazz trio Lubambo formed with Nilson Matta and Duduka da Fonseca. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Anat Cohen\nEver charismatic\, prolific and inspired\, Grammy-nominated clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. \n\n\n\nAnat has been declared Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association every year since 2007\, and has also been named the top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in DownBeat for multiple years running. \n\n\n\nSince 2005\, Anat’s series of releases via her Anzic Records label have seen the clarinetist-saxophonist range from infectious swingers to lilting balladry\, from small groups to larger ensembles and back again\, exploring a universe of music along the way. \n\n\n\nAnat was born in Tel Aviv\, Israel\, and raised into a musical family. She attended the Tel Aviv School for the Arts\, the “Thelma Yellin” High School for the Arts and the Jaffa Music Conservatory. After graduation\, she discharged her mandatory Israeli military service duty from 1993-95\, playing tenor saxophone in the Israeli Air Force band. Through the World Scholarship Tour\, Anat was able to attend the Berklee College of Music where she not only honed her jazz chops but also expanded her musical horizons\, developing a deep love and facility for various Latin music styles. \n\n\n\nAnat has also recorded four acclaimed albums as part of the 3 Cohens Sextet with her brothers\, saxophonist Yuval and trumpeter Avishai. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Peter Martin\nPeter Martin is an acclaimed jazz pianist\, composer\, arranger\, educator and entrepreneur. \n\n\n\nHis touring career has taken him to six continents numerous times and has played in the White House by invitation from President Obama several times. \n\n\n\nPeter Martin performed on and arranged Dianne Reeves’ Grammy-winning release A Little Moonlight and appeared in George Clooney’s 2005 film Good Night\, and Good Luck\, as well as being the featured pianist and an arranger on the Grammy-winning soundtrack. Peter has also performed\, toured\, and recorded with Wynton Marsalis\, Chris Botti\, Betty Carter\, Christian McBride\, and Joshua Redman\, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic\, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. \n\n\n\nPeter attended the Juilliard School of Music and has been on the faculties of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville\, Northwestern University\, Tulane University\, the University of New Orleans and New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. He has performed workshops and master classes at institutions worldwide\, including Oberlin College\, Duke University\, the Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshops\, Steinway Piano Gallery\, the Rotterdam Conservatory\, and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow. \n\n\n\nIn 2015\, after launching an successful educational video podcast\, 2-Minute Jazz\, Martin founded a revolutionary jazz educational web platform\, Open Studio\, where students from over 120 countries are part of an active community and are continuing to learn from Martin\, Dianne Reeves\, Fred Hersch\, Christian McBride\, Greg Hutchinson\, Romero Lubambo and other artists.
