SUMMARY:Meditative Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Explore meditation\, reflection\, and creative awareness inside AMFA’s exhibition A Month of Sundays: Art and the Persistence of Time\, where art becomes a guide for slowing down\, calming the mind\, and reconnecting to the present. \nLed in collaboration with specialists from the UAMS Mindfulness Program\, Meditative Sundays offers a guided experience\, from meditation and slow looking to sound baths and yoga. As the series unfolds\, deepen focus\, release stress\, and build support well-being and connection through art. \nIn this session\, settle into deep listening as resonant tones from singing bowls\, gongs\, and contemplative instruments wash through the space. The layered sounds quiet the mind\, ease stress\, and create a grounded sense of presence before visiting the Galleries to explore the art on view. \n\nThe Mid-South Cohort\, a multi-year\, multi-institutional exhibition partnership formed by the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art\, in collaboration with the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts\, the Birmingham Museum of Art\, Fisk University Art Gallery\, and the Mississippi Museum of Art\, is made possible by the Art Bridges Cohort Program. This exhibition was organized by the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. \n \nPhoto by Sara Reeves.

SUMMARY:Architecture and Design Network Lecture Series: Nerin Kadribegovic
DESCRIPTION:The mission of the Architecture and Design Network (ADN) is to educate the public about architecture\, design\, and related disciplines and the ways in which their practice shapes communities and affects people’s lives. \nIn this free lecture entitled “From Blight to Bright\,” you are invited to hear from Nerin Kadribegovic\, Founder and Principal of Kadre Architects. Through a deep dive into California’s housing insecurity – examining how we got here\, and the ways we are moving forward – his talk will center around Kadre’s solutions for the housing crisis including temporary\, interim\, permanent housing projects and important community support spaces. Many of the constructed projects and the designs currently in construction examine community impact and set aggressive sustainability goals. \nBefore the lecture\, enjoy a short reception from 5:30-6:00 p.m. in the Atrium. The lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Governor Winthrop Rockefeller Lecture Hall. \nAbout Nerin Kadribegovic\nNerin Kadribegovic’s passion for navigating complex design problems\, especially where economy is of paramount importance\, captures an eye for beauty and design\, notably in social cause\, that results in unconventional\, award-winning solutions. Obsessed with artfully directing natural light to create nuanced\, playful moments\, he ushers a spirit of dignity into places\, where least expected\, through the aesthetic design opportunity. \nA third-generation architect who endured displacement as a refugee of the wars in Yugoslavia and Bosnia\, Nerin has directly experienced the impact of chaotic social and environmental disruption on people and society. This alert awareness evokes deep empathic connection to critical issues facing metropolitan urban centers around the world gripped by environmental or socioeconomic crises. \nThe wartime reality imposed a fragility on life and shelter\, that ignited his resolve in dissolving obstacles. Protecting a broken community\, Nerin developed the uncanny ability to transform whatever material was at one’s disposal into something of functionality\, beauty and meaning. Instilling hope and safety during hardship has become second nature\, embedded into his mindset\, both in design and leadership for social cause. \nPrior to launching Kadre\, Nerin was a partner at the award-winning firm of Lehrer Architects. When the pandemic brought needed urgency to protect Los Angeles’s most vulnerable population\, Nerin led passionately in creating a template for tackling and ameliorating the city’s 60\,000-person homelessness issue. During the height of the health crisis\, he led the team through an accelerated\, aggressive timeline to provide bridge housing. His designs – in collaboration with the City government\, first on the AETNA Bridge Home\, followed by designs for Tiny Home Villages – now serve as the lodestar to ending the homeless crisis in the City of Los Angeles. These projects have raised and set the City’s design standards for sheltering the homeless. \n\nPhoto by Paul Vu.

SUMMARY:Concert Series: African Rhythms Alumni Quintet
DESCRIPTION:On the cusp of the late NEA Jazz Master\, pianist\, and composer Dr. Randy Weston’s centennial birthday\, esteemed members of Weston’s “African Rhythms” jazz ensemble – including Weston’s musical director and arranger T.K. Blue – have rejoined forces to pay tribute to their exceptional leader. \nThe African Rhythms Alumni Quintet bears direct witness to Dr. Weston’s brilliant integration of African aesthetics with the spirit of jazz that was cultivated by piano legendries like Duke Ellington\, Thelonius Monk\, Count Basie\, Nat King Cole\, and Earl Hines. The sonic foundations of Weston’s trailblazing style include the dynamic drum polyrhythms of West Africa\, the use of jazzy horns and plucked guitars from Ghanaian highlife music\, and Ellington’s orchestral approach to the piano. \nBy bringing the unique “sound” of Weston’s compositions and arrangements to the stage\, the African Rhythms Alumni Quintet transmits what – in Weston’s view – must be heard as the very “spirit” of his person. This is made possible by the world-class musicianship of T.K. Blue (saxophone/flute/musical director)\, Chief Baba Neil Clarke (percussion)\, Alex Blake (bass)\, Ku-umba Frank Lacy (trombone)\, and Sharp Radway (piano).  \n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. Dean DDS and Mary Ann Coleman\, Mimi San Pedro\, Olivia Farrell\, and Susan Conley.

SUMMARY:Retyping "True Grit"
DESCRIPTION:Experience artist Tim Youd’s meditative act of retyping novels one keystroke at a time. Over the course of 10 days\, Youd continues his 100 Novels Project here at AMFA by retyping Charles Portis’s True Grit amongst the art on view in A Month of Sundays: Art and the Persistence of Time. \nThe 100 Novels Project is an ongoing performance artwork in which Youd retypes novels from beginning to end in locations that play a central role in the novels. By retyping True Grit in Little Rock – the city where Portis once lived and worked – Youd honors one of Arkansas’s most iconic literary voices\, using endurance\, focus\, and time to reflect on and appreciate the novel’s enduring impact on American identity. \nDrop by the Harriet and Warren Stephens Gallery to witness Youd’s practice up close! Retyping True Grit is ongoing from March 19 to 28\, 2026. \nPhoto by Tracey Tucker. \nAbout Tim Youd\nTim Youd (b. 1967\, Worcester\, MA) is a performance and visual artist working in painting\, sculpture\, and video.
