SUMMARY:Concert Series: African Rhythms Alumni Quintet
DESCRIPTION:On the cusp of the late NEA Jazz Master\, pianist\, and composer Dr. Randy Weston’s centennial birthday\, esteemed members of Weston’s “African Rhythms” jazz ensemble – including Weston’s musical director and arranger T.K. Blue – have rejoined forces to pay tribute to their exceptional leader. \nThe African Rhythms Alumni Quintet bears direct witness to Dr. Weston’s brilliant integration of African aesthetics with the spirit of jazz that was cultivated by piano legendries like Duke Ellington\, Thelonius Monk\, Count Basie\, Nat King Cole\, and Earl Hines. The sonic foundations of Weston’s trailblazing style include the dynamic drum polyrhythms of West Africa\, the use of jazzy horns and plucked guitars from Ghanaian highlife music\, and Ellington’s orchestral approach to the piano. \nBy bringing the unique “sound” of Weston’s compositions and arrangements to the stage\, the African Rhythms Alumni Quintet transmits what – in Weston’s view – must be heard as the very “spirit” of his person. This is made possible by the world-class musicianship of T.K. Blue (saxophone/flute/musical director)\, Chief Baba Neil Clarke (percussion)\, Alex Blake (bass)\, Ku-umba Frank Lacy (trombone)\, and Sharp Radway (piano).  \n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. Dean DDS and Mary Ann Coleman\, Mimi San Pedro\, Olivia Farrell\, and Susan Conley.

SUMMARY:Concert Series: Lost Bayou Ramblers
DESCRIPTION:The two-time Grammy award winning Lost Bayou Ramblers’ evolution as a progressive Louisiana French band rooted in Cajun traditions continues to excite\, challenge\, and redefine both genre expectations as well as cultural preconceptions. \nFounded in 1999 by brothers Andre and Louis Michot\, the years have brought LBR a feature on Jack White’s American Epic\, contributions to the Oscar nominated film Beasts of the Southern Wild\, and Grammy wins for Live: Orpheum Theater NOLA (their 2023 album with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra) and their 2017 studio album Kalenda. \nLost Bayou Ramblers stands at the crosscurrents of Louisiana culture by inhabiting the gray area between Cajun and Creole\, convention and innovation\, mystery and a revelation\, experimenting and growing the show to what it’s become today: an eclectic mix of modern sounds and rhythms with ancient Cajun melodies and lyrics. \n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. Dean DDS and Mary Ann Coleman\, Mimi San Pedro\, Olivia Farrell\, and Susan Conley. \nPhoto by Zach Smith.

SUMMARY:Concert Series: Bette Smith
DESCRIPTION:Critically acclaimed and blessed with a voice described as “raspy\,” “sassy\,” “raunchy” and “sweet ’n soulful\,” Bette grippingly fuses the soul\, rock & roll\, funk\, blues\, and gospel music she heard in her Brooklyn youth into something all her own. \nThe young Bette Smith would have no idea that her music would take her around the world\, from shows in America headlining and supporting the likes of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the Drive-By Truckers to spotlights in the pages of The New York Times\, Billboard\, Paste\, Bust\, and beyond; from the airwaves of NPR World Café and the top 40 of the Americana Music Radio Chart to official Spotify playlist adds and a song streamed well over a million times. \nShe traveled to the UK to make her new album Goodthing with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse\, James Blunt\, James Bay\, Anonhi & The Johnsons\, Sia\, Corinne Bailey Rae\, Tina Turner). Hogarth attests\, “Bette is the real deal. Her delivery is the truth and comes straight from the heart. She is able to communicate with ease with her wonderful gift of a voice and I was delighted to work on this record.” \n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. Dean DDS and Mary Ann Coleman\, Mimi San Pedro\, Olivia Farrell\, and Susan Conley. \nPhoto by Shervin Lainez.

SUMMARY:Concert Series: Phil Cook
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Phil Cook is a quietly pivotal figure in modern American music\, known for his subtle yet transformative contributions to some of the past decade’s most vital folk\, indie\, and gospel records. Whether it is the spirited piano solo on Hiss Golden Messenger’s Day O Day\, the inclusive melody of Bon Iver’s AUTAC\, or his work with artists like The War on Drugs\, The Blind Boys of Alabama\, and the Indigo Girls\, Cook has shaped the sound of countless artists with his soulful\, understated touch. \nIn early 2020\, Cook paused his relentless touring duties with others\, intent on focusing on how all his experiences and erudition could fit into his own songs. He found a cabin in the North Carolina mountains\, began leaving his windowsill slightly cracked each night\, and recorded tangled bird songs. With the sun finally high\, Cook would listen to the day’s recordings and improvise in real time on the instrument that remains the first and most steadfast love of his musical life: the piano. \nIn his new album Appalachia Borealis—a deeply poignant and personal set of 11 piano meditations inspired by his windowsill improvisations—Cook reflects not only the turmoil and sadness of a fraught time\, but also the hope\, light\, and joy of looking for the other side. You can sometimes still hear the birds whose tune and time helped to inspire so many of these songs. \nEven when they are not within earshot\, their essence remains: that is\, to rise and meet the day best you can\, no matter how uncertain and strange the moment may seem. \n\n\n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. Dean DDS and Mary Ann Coleman\, Mimi San Pedro\, Olivia Farrell\, and Susan Conley. \nPhoto courtesy of the artist. \n\n\n\n\nWEBSITE\n\n\n\nSPOTIFY\n\n\n\nINSTAGRAM\n\n\n\nYOUTUBE\n\n\n\nFACEBOOK

SUMMARY:Concert Series: James McMurtry (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:According to Americana all-star Jason Isbell\, “James McMurtry is one of my very few favorite songwriters on Earth and these days he’s working at the top of his game.” \nSinger-songwriter McMurtry’s albums Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005) back the claim\, each scoring endless critical praise. The former earned McMurtry his highest Billboard 200 chart position in two decades (since eclipsed by 2015’s Complicated Game) and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Childish Things spent six full weeks topping the Americana Music Radio chart in 2005 and 2006\, and won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year\, with We Can’t Make It Here named the organization’s Song of the Year. \nHis latest album The Horses and the Hounds (2021) was recorded with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (John Fogerty\, Van Halen\, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica\, California – a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory\, Coming Home (2006). \nOther accolades include a 1996 Grammy award nomination for Long Form Music Video for Where’d You Hide the Body and an American Indie Award for Best Americana Album for It Had to Happen (1997).  \nWhenever he is not on the road\, you can catch him performing at the Continental Club in Austin. \n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. SUMMARY:Concert Series: Camille Thurman with Darrell Green Quartet
DESCRIPTION:As a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition\, Camille Thurman is quickly becoming one of the standard bearers for the form\, making a considerable and dynamic contribution to the legacy of jazz while paying tribute to its heroes. \nFluid and powerful on the tenor saxophone and highly inventive as a vocalist\, she also plays bass clarinet\, flute\, and piccolo. Her rich sax sound has been compared to Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon\, while her vocal approach—including an impressive scatting ability—has been classified alongside those of Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter. \nThurman made history becoming the first woman in 30 years to tour\, record\, and perform full-time internationally with the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (2018-2020 season). When she is not touring with the JALCO\, Thurman is on the road with the Darrell Green Quartet\, with whom she has played at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. \n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. SUMMARY:Concert Series: The Love Light Orchestra featuring John Németh
DESCRIPTION:The Love Light Orchestra\, formed in 2016\, draws inspiration from the grand\, orchestral blues sound of mid-20th century Memphis legends like B.B. King and Bobby Bland. While paying homage to this era\, the orchestra also embodies the spirit of the present\, offering a blend of down-home musicality and sophistication reminiscent of packed nightclubs of yesteryears. \nLed by trumpeter Marc Franklin\, guitarist Joe Restivo\, and vocalist John Nemeth\, the ensemble has garnered praise for its immersive performances\, capturing the essence of Memphis’ influential jazz and blues scene. Their debut studio album\, Leave the Light On\, showcases the collective’s dedication over three years\, navigating busy schedules and the challenges of a global health crisis. \nWith the release of their sophomore album\, the orchestra refines its sound\, presenting mostly original tunes that highlight their veteran musicianship while looking toward the future. The Love Light Orchestra balances a reverence for the past with a forward-thinking outlook\, solidifying their place in the contemporary blues landscape. \n\n\nPhoto courtesy of the artist. \n\n\n\n\nWEBSITE\n\n\n\nFACEBOOK\n\n\n\nINSTAGRAM\n\n\n\nSPOTIFY\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2024-2025 Concert Series is supported by Saracen Casino Resort.
