SUMMARY:Meditative Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Explore meditation\, reflection\, and creative awareness inside AMFA’s exhibition A Month of Sundays: Art and the Persistence of Time\, where art becomes a guide for slowing down\, calming the mind\, and reconnecting to the present. \nLed in collaboration with specialists from the UAMS Mindfulness Program\, Meditative Sundays offers a guided experience\, from meditation and slow looking to sound baths and yoga. As the series unfolds\, deepen focus\, release stress\, and build support well-being and connection through art. \nIn this session\, settle into deep listening as resonant tones from singing bowls\, gongs\, and contemplative instruments wash through the space. The layered sounds quiet the mind\, ease stress\, and create a grounded sense of presence before visiting the Galleries to explore the art on view. \n\nThe Mid-South Cohort\, a multi-year\, multi-institutional exhibition partnership formed by the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art\, in collaboration with the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts\, the Birmingham Museum of Art\, Fisk University Art Gallery\, and the Mississippi Museum of Art\, is made possible by the Art Bridges Cohort Program. This exhibition was organized by the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. \n \nPhoto by Sara Reeves.

SUMMARY:Concert Series: African Rhythms Alumni Quintet
DESCRIPTION:On the cusp of the late NEA Jazz Master\, pianist\, and composer Dr. Randy Weston’s centennial birthday\, esteemed members of Weston’s “African Rhythms” jazz ensemble – including Weston’s musical director and arranger T.K. Blue – have rejoined forces to pay tribute to their exceptional leader. \nThe African Rhythms Alumni Quintet bears direct witness to Dr. Weston’s brilliant integration of African aesthetics with the spirit of jazz that was cultivated by piano legendries like Duke Ellington\, Thelonius Monk\, Count Basie\, Nat King Cole\, and Earl Hines. The sonic foundations of Weston’s trailblazing style include the dynamic drum polyrhythms of West Africa\, the use of jazzy horns and plucked guitars from Ghanaian highlife music\, and Ellington’s orchestral approach to the piano. \nBy bringing the unique “sound” of Weston’s compositions and arrangements to the stage\, the African Rhythms Alumni Quintet transmits what – in Weston’s view – must be heard as the very “spirit” of his person. This is made possible by the world-class musicianship of T.K. Blue (saxophone/flute/musical director)\, Chief Baba Neil Clarke (percussion)\, Alex Blake (bass)\, Ku-umba Frank Lacy (trombone)\, and Sharp Radway (piano).  \n\nThe 2025-2026 Concert Series is supported in part by John H. Dean DDS and Mary Ann Coleman\, Mimi San Pedro\, Olivia Farrell\, and Susan Conley.
